A CREATIVE APPROACH tO GROWTH, healing & self-expression

Sometimes words aren't enough.

Children, teens, and even adults can struggle to express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through conversation alone. Art therapy provides another way to communicate, one that is creative, engaging, and often feels less intimidating than sitting down and talking about difficult feelings.

Art therapy combines the creative process with evidence-based therapeutic techniques to support emotional well-being, self-discovery, and personal growth.

Through art-making and creative exploration, individuals can process experiences, build coping skills, strengthen self-awareness, and develop healthier ways of navigating life's challenges.

The focus is never on creating a perfect piece of artwork. Instead, art becomes a tool for expression, understanding, and connection.

How does art therapy work?

Art therapy is facilitated by a trained and credentialed mental health professional who has specialized education in both counseling and art therapy. Sessions may include a variety of creative materials and activities such as:

  • Drawing

  • Painting

  • Collage

  • Mixed media

  • Sculpture

  • Creative journaling

  • Hands-on sensory activities

These creative experiences can help individuals express thoughts and emotions that may be difficult to put into words while providing opportunities to build confidence, practice problem-solving, and explore new perspectives. Each session is tailored to the individual. Some clients spend more time creating their internal expression, while others incorporate conversation throughout the process. Together, we find an approach that feels comfortable, supportive, and meaningful.

Art Therapy for Neurodivergent Children & Teens

Many neurodivergent children and teens thrive when given opportunities to communicate and process experiences in ways that extend beyond traditional conversation.

Art therapy can provide a supportive environment for exploring emotions, building self-understanding, developing coping strategies, and strengthening relationships—all while honoring each individual's unique strengths and needs.

My approach is rooted in neurodiversity-affirming care, focusing on supporting and empowering clients rather than trying to change who they are. Every child deserves a space where they feel seen, valued, and understood.

Does My Child Need To Be Artistic?

Not at all. One of the most common misconceptions about art therapy is that clients need to be talented artists or enjoy creating artwork. The truth is that artistic skill has nothing to do with the effectiveness of art therapy.

Art therapy is about the process, the meaning behind the product, but the artistic SKILL to create the product is not important.

Whether a child loves drawing every day or has never picked up a paintbrush before, creative activities can provide valuable opportunities for self-expression, exploration, and growth.
There is no right or wrong way to participate. Sometimes the use of play therapy and/or sandtray therapy can be used when a child does not want to engage with crafting. But the use of the creative process continues to be involved as an extension of art therapy.

HOW IS Art Therapy Different from traditional counseling?

Traditional counseling primarily relies on verbal communication, while art therapy incorporates creative expression as an additional pathway for exploration and healing. For many individuals, especially children and teens, creating can feel less intimidating than talking directly about difficult emotions or experiences. Art therapy allows clients to explore thoughts and feelings in a way that feels engaging, accessible, and creatively inclined. While conversation remains an important part of the therapeutic process, creativity offers another avenue for insight, understanding, and connection.
